An Eye on Flowers: Traditional patterns for an eye-catching scarf

A selection of An Eye of Flowers scarves, 2025.11.29.

These scarves reflect my exploration of pattern and color. I enjoy changing the treadle sequence in the Bird’s Eye and Rose Path patterns to shift the design from diamonds to lozenges, and from stylized flowers to zigzag stripes. Changing weft colors highlight different aspects of the pattern in combination with the Natural warp.

Suggested use: Wear as a light and cozy scarf (or you can even use it as a table runner if it matches your home decor!).

Materials: 100% cotton and/or cotton slub yarn in various colors.

Dimensions: 8-9″ wide by a variety of lengths, from 47-75″, not including fringe. Some scarves have sewn rolled hems instead of fringe.

Handwoven on4-Shaft Floor Loom with a 15-dent reed.

Special weaving technique: Rose Path and Traditional Bird’s Eye patterns, from Marguerite Porter Davidson’s A Handweaver’s Pattern Book (ninth printing, 1971). Some scarves have a skipped dent to add a subtle stripe or insert an accent color.

Care: Hand or machine wash cold with regular or delicate laundry soap ~ air or machine dry on low. (Machine wash in a mesh bag to help prevent tangled fringe.) Press if desired.

Finishing touches: Fringe or rolled hem, and metal ‘handmade’ charm.
