Fibers

I use a variety of fibers in my weaving, and have plans to explore even more.

Materials used include warm wool, smooth silk, soft cotton, sleek linen, and luxurious alpaca. See this page for how to care for these various fibers.

Most of the items I currently weave are made with non-Alaskan yarns, sourced from across the continents: Canada, India, Lithuania, Nanchong (in Sichuan, China), Peru, and the U.S.A.’s own North Carolina and Texas ~ and, naturally, from Corriedale and Columbia sheep on western United States ranches.

What about Alaskan Yarn?

Midnight/Sun: An Alaskan Skies Scarf: 100% cotton warp with 100% Unalaska Harbour Alaskan wool, April 2025.

There is something really special about working with yarn produced right here in Alaska, especially when the local companies enjoy exploring and experimenting with colors too! Look at these colors and textures!

“Crazy Carrot” scarf on the loom: Alaskan wool/merino weft on 100% U.S. cotton warp, 18 April 2025. Wool/merino yarn produced by Coyote Trail Farm and Mill.
“Lavender Narwhal” blanket woven with worsted super wash wool produced by Alaska Jude’s Yarn, on 100% cotton warp, August 2025.

I plan to expand the number of items I have already created with Alaska-produced fiber. You can see samples of these and those made with other fibers on this and other pages of my website .

Future fiber exploration: I would eventually like to experiment with other weaving materials, from fireweed and grasses from my garden to recycled materials like clothing and even plastic produce bags… (Whaaat?!?)

How soon will this future arrive…? Step-by-step, I will develop products that meet my satisfaction for beautiful uses. These will be the ones for you. (I always keep the misshapen and oddly colored ones for myself.)
